Behzad Mirzaeian Dehkordi was born in Shahrekord, Iran, in 1966. He received the B.Sc.degree in electronics engineering from Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran, in 1985, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in power engineering from Isfahan University of Technology (IUT), Isfahan, Iran in 1994 and 2000, respectively. In 2002, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Isfahan, Isfahan, Iran, where he is currently a Professor in electrical engineering. He was a Visiting Professor with the Power Electronic Laboratory, Seoul National University (SNU), Seoul, South Korea, in 2008 and 2016. His research interests include:

Power Electronics and Drives, Intelligent systems,

Renewable Energy (Photovoltaic) and Power Quality Problems.

Title: Application of Fuzzy Logic in Dynamic Stability of Power Systems

Abstract

 

  Control and stability are two of the most important subjects that have to be studied in the design and operation of a power system. These studies are necessary and their results can be utilized for better and more reliable ways of providing energy to the consumers.

  This research is concerned with the investigation of effectiveness of fuzzy logic controllers in the dynamic stability studies. Classical power System Stabilizer (PSS) show some short comings especially when multi-machine systems are considered. The shortcomings are noticeable when PSS’s are designed for each generator separately and then all the generators along with their PSS controllers are integrated in a network system. In order to utilize the simplicity and overcome the deficiencies of the classical PSS, one can employ optimal tuning and optimal locating algorithms, however, these algorithms are very complex and reduce the significance of the original design simplicity. This research aims at offering an alternative way of designing controllers for power systems. This new power stabilizer is based on fuzzy logic concepts.

  The designed fuzzy logic controller is superior to the classical PSS and at the same time retains the simplicity of the design. According to our studies it was observed that at the same time both the maximum fluctuations of the rotor angle and its speed as well as their settling time were reduced.

  Furthermore, since these power system models are dynamic and their Parameters changes through time, an adaptive power stabilizer is necessary for proper operation of the system. In this thesis an adaptive power system stabilizer was designed which is based on the control rules of Sugeno type. The coefficients for Sugeno rules were found by using the well-known Kalman’s algorithm. This adaptive power stabilizer has given better results relative to a classical adaptive power stabilizer. Furthermore, this stabilizer approximated a fuzzy controller with optimal coefficients based on Sugeno’s rules. To find these coefficients, first some data about the input-output of the system are gathered, when the system is changing, then using these data the Wiener’ s equation is solved for the optimal coefficients. The linear optimal controllers are designed to evaluate the efficiency of the classical PSS stabilizers as well as the fuzzy logic controllers with respect to the dynamic stability of a power system. In closing it should be noted that computer simulations test the implementations of fuzzy controllers of this research

Title: Multi-objective Optimal Design of Switched Reluctance Motor

Abstract

 

  In electrical engineering, an optimal design of electrical motors and derives due to their widespread use in industry and domestic appliances are of special importance. Usually, in an optimal design problem, several objective or cost functions should be satisfied simultaneously. In optimization of a system with several objective functions, the aim is to find a solution that is as close as possible to optimal solution of each objective function. In this thesis, the aim is the multi-objective design of Switched Reluctance (SR) motor. SR motor is of very simple structure; its rotor is brushless and has no winding of any kind. The motor is singly excited from stator windings, which are concentric coils wound in series on diagonally opposite stator poles. In spite of the simple structure of the motor, because of highly saturated operating condition and the doubly salient structure of the motor, accurate analysis of SR motor is difficult and time consuming. Optimal design of SR motor, due to large number of design parameters and their interaction with switching control parameters and also lack of an analytical model for machine has not been thoroughly investigated yet.

  In this thesis, a new method for multi-objective optimal design of SR motor is presented. For this purpose, a novel multi-objective optimization method based on Genetic Fuzzy Algorithm (GFA) is proposed. GFA is an evolutionary algorithm, which maintains a population of candidate solution for a given problem. Candidates are evaluated and assigned fitness values based on their relative performance. Then, they are given a chance to be reproduced, i.e., replicate themselves a number of times proportional to their fitness. Hence, for optimal design of SR motor in optimization process based on GFA, numerous performance evaluations of motor are needed during the optimization process. For this purpose, a fuzzy expert system for predicting the performance of SR motor has been developed. This predictor is fast and relatively accurate.  It can be used for optimal design of SR motor in optimizing process. An accurate analysis program based on Magnetic Equivalent Circuit (MEC) method has been used to generate the input-output data. The input-output data pairs are used to produce the initial fuzzy rules for predicting the performance of SR motor. The initial set of fuzzy rules with triangular membership functions has been devised using a table look-up scheme and then optimized to a set of fuzzy rules with Gaussian membership functions using gradient descent training scheme. Control parameters such as on and off switching angle and current limit are optimized for optimal SR motor by using GFA. In optimization process, it is interesting that a smaller size motor is obtained with other objective functions and constraints satisfied at the same time. The results obtained for several motors with different sizes and compared with an already made motor have shown good capability of proposed method
